In Vedic tradition, the Namakarana (नामकरण) is one of the 16 sacred Samskaras — the formal ceremony where a baby receives their name. Traditionally performed on the 11th or 12th day after birth, this ceremony aligns the child's name with their cosmic blueprint. Choosing an auspicious Muhurat (sacred time window) ensures the ceremony is performed under the most favourable planetary conditions.

Enter your baby's birth date to find the most auspicious dates for the naming ceremony based on Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Vara (weekday), and Yoga.

📿 Vedic Guide: What Makes a Good Namakarana Muhurat?

✅ Auspicious Nakshatras

Rohini Mrigashira Punarvasu Pushya Hasta Chitra Swati Anuradha Shatabhisha Revati Ashwini Uttara Phalguni

❌ Nakshatras to Avoid

Bharani Krittika Ardra Ashlesha Jyeshtha Mula

✅ Auspicious Tithis

2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 13th (Shukla Paksha preferred)

❌ Tithis to Avoid

Amavasya (New Moon), Purnima, Chaturdashi, Ashtami, Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th)

🕰 Best Time of Day: The ceremony is traditionally performed in the morning hours (after sunrise, before noon). Avoid Rahu Kalam and Yamaganda periods for your region. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are generally considered auspicious days.

🙏 How to Perform Namakarana

  1. Purification: The father (or priest) takes a ritual bath and performs prayers.
  2. Sankalpa: The priest takes a formal vow (Sankalpa) with the date, time, and place of the ceremony.
  3. Puja: Prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha and the family deity.
  4. Name announcement: The father whispers the chosen name into the baby's right ear three times.
  5. Public announcement: The name is announced to all family members and guests.
  6. Blessings: Elders bless the baby with the new name. Gifts of gold, silver, and clothes are traditional.
  7. Feast: A celebratory meal is shared with family and community.

The Panchanga (पंचांग) is the Vedic almanac that describes the five elements of each day:

  • Tithi — The lunar day (1-30 in the lunar month)
  • Vara — The weekday (Sunday through Saturday)
  • Nakshatra — The lunar mansion the Moon is transiting
  • Yoga — The angular relationship between Sun and Moon (27 yogas)
  • Karana — Half a Tithi (11 karanas, each lasting ~6 hours)

A good Muhurat considers all five elements together, not just the nakshatra alone.

The 11th day is considered especially auspicious because the mother's body has had time to recover from childbirth, and the ceremonial impurity (Sutak) period is complete. In some traditions, the 12th day is preferred. If these days fall on inauspicious dates, the ceremony can be postponed to the next available auspicious day.

Some traditions (particularly in South India) perform the ceremony on the 28th day or 1st month. The important thing is to choose a genuinely auspicious date within your family's tradition.

The name chosen during Namakarana should ideally begin with the Janm Akshar — the sacred birth letter determined by the baby's Moon sign (Nakshatra) at the moment of birth. This creates a vibrational harmony between the child's cosmic blueprint and their name.
